Cyberknife's Radiosurgery Offers a New Option for Prostate Cancer Patients

The Cyberknife's Radiosurgery System is a non-invasive alternative to surgery and traditional radiation therapy for prostate cancer treatments such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT).

The Cyberknife has the unique ability to deliver a precise dose of radiation to prostate cancer as well as other tumors and cancers throughout the body.  Cyberknife of Long Island has the latest technology and is a leader in delivering stereotactic radiosurgery for prostate cancer.

Why Choose Cyberknife Radiosurgery for Prostate Cancer?

  • Painless.
  • Non Invasive.
  • No Anesthesia.
  • Outpatient Procedure which is completed in only five treatments.

The Cyberknife Treats the Tumor, Not the Surrounding Healthy Tissue

The Cyberknife, unlike traditional linear accelerators, has the unique ability to target the tumor, with sub millimeter accuracy.  This is all completed while sparing the healthy tissues and organs.  Cyberknife of Long Island is able to offer this precision for prostate cancer because we use:

  • 3D imaging, such as CT Scan, MRI, or PET Scans that allow the physicians locate the tumor's shape and size and avoid healthy tissue.

What About Side Effects From Prostate Cancer Treatment with Cyberknife?

The total dose of radiation to the patient is significantly less when treated with Cyberknife Radiosurgery when compared to traditional radiation therapy for prostate cancer. This results in minimal or no side effects.  The other benefit to treatment with the Cyberknife is that there is no recovery time.  Although some patients who complete Cyberknife Radiosurgery for prostate cancer may experience some minor, temporary side effects such as increased urinary frequency, in contrast to surgical removal of the prostate which has a higher risk of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.  The precision of the Cyberknife allows for a higher dose of radiation per treatment, which reduces the total number of treatments by about 2 months.

5 Year Outcomes Published: Cyberknife is Successful in Treating Prostate Cancer

A multi center study reviewing the efficacy of prostate cancer treatment using the Cyberknife was published in the January 2011 issue of Radiation Oncology.  This study found that 93 percent of prostate cancer patients had no recurrence of their cancer at the median follow up of five years, which compares favorably to results obtained with other treatment options, including surgery and conventional radiation therapy.  This study concluded that Cyberknife Radiosurgery can achieve high rates of disease control while sparing critical structures and healthy tissue, thereby limiting undesirable side effects typically associated with prostate cancer treatments and preserving patient's quality of life.
